Character Movement : Issue with building after changing Project Product name in Player settings

IndieGameHustle 1 month ago in Game Creator updated by Marti (Lead Developer) 1 week ago 30 2 duplicates

Having a issue:  After I  change the unity project  ( product name )  in player settings, there is a issue with character movement. The Character Movement issue only appears after the build. Works perfect in the editor, not after building. Also I am not getting any console error messages. I think this is a bug.

Unity version:
2019.2
Game Creator version:
1.01

Yeah definitely. It was a nice addition. We're just temporally removing it to identify the problem. We don't normally do this, but since we haven't been able to reproduce this problem, we're stripping everything we believe might be the case and reimplement it later. But for now, this will allow us assess whether the problem is here or not.

By the way, I'm marking the issue as Fixed, because I've already stripped all the necessary code. Tomorrow there should be a new Game Creator update available with this fix. If you still experience problems, feel free to reopen the ticket here.

Not Reproducible

Hi IndieGameHustle;

We don't use the product name anywhere, so my guess is that the problem might be somewhere else. I'm not sure I understand what you refer to "an issue with the character movement". Could you screen capture your game? This will help us narrow down where the problem might be. Thanks!

Please view this video  :

1st : I show it working without changing the name on the product and in the editor.

2nd : I show it working without changing the name after building.

3rd :  I show changing the name and building then you see the issue with the character not moving forward. etc....

I then show changing it back to the name Animated_Jam_01 and it works again. So I think there a issue somewhere.

Under review

That's one of the strangest things I've ever seen. The only thing that come to my mind is that you're setting the speed of the character from a previously saved Local Variable. Changing the name of the project might also change the path where game data is saved.

Can you tell if you're modifying the Player's speed? or whether you have any other Trigger somewhere that could be messing with any of the Player's properties

Yeah it is strange -
In the video the player can Walk, Run, Turn, Jump etc... but not move forward in any direction when I change the Product Name?

Please see below for trigger being used on player -

I also Noticed that If I Hold the Analog Stick Down before the scene starts, the Character moves as normal but as soon as I let go of the analog, you get the "no movement" you saw in the video. As if the input is received... then when the scene starts its forward movement stops working.

to add : I turned off the Jump,PickUp,Run and Crawl and the issue is still there. With no console errors.

I see you have a lot of game objects in your scene and this might make debugging the game problematic. Could you try creating a new scene and having just the Player on top of a floor and a simple camera? See if that works.

Also, not sure what these yellow holographic cubes are. If they are colliders, that might be interfering with the Player's movement.

Hello Team,

I have a updated video showing a basic scene with just a Camera, Cam Motor, Block and Light. standard player model

Before and after Building , before and after changing the product name. The move issue still there.

hello again  here is the link to a youtube video that showcases the issue :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKjMikvZenY&feature=youtu.be

I have the same problem, also my Camera shakes when i stop moving. Game Creator is a load of Rubbish i want a refund.

ya i just posted similar here .  i also changed the project name at some point.  i will try to go back and see if i rename it back, to see if it resolves the issue.  might help troubleshoot things.

i can confirm i'm having the same issue.  i had updated the project name a few weeks back and haven't done a test build in a while.  built one yesterday and noticed the controller issue.  i went back to a previously saved project, copied the "product name" from the old project and pasted it into the more updated project and build it.  and it worked perfectly.  Definitely seems to be an issue with the product name for some reason.

im having the same issue as stated here

I've merged the two issues together. However, note that we can't provide support for Unity 2019.3, since it's in Beta state; meaning its code is unstable. Once a tech-stream is released, we then start providing support

Hi Slash, thanks for the heads up. We haven't been able to reproduce this, but we're looking into it. Jack, despite his language on the previous message, was kind enough to provide a project for us where this happened. We're investigating the issue and we'll circle back once we've figured out the problem.

Sorry for the trouble.

Hi, thank you for the heads up. Seems there are some problems since the acceleration and deceleration were first introduced. These are most likely where the problem is. However, the name seems to be affecting the Player movement. I'm opening a ticket and circle back as soon as I find what's causing this.

Just to be sure, this also happens when starting a project from scratch?

Thank you for looking in to this. As I do need to change the Product Name.

I have seen a couple of comments that raise the point of that regarding the acceleration and Deceleration.

I am working from my preexisting project.

We're currently rolling back the acceleration and deceleration properties to how they initially were. We don't like this option, but we were trying to reproduce the problems sent by you and other users without success.

By rolling back the character locomotion system without acceleration will allow us to identify whether the problem was introduced when adding these new features or it's something entirely different.

The update should come between today and tomorrow, so stay tuned! :-)

Hi, If needed, I can provide my projects too. even though I have the impression that it's only me who experience the issue...

the problem is not random, it happens every time.

I've opened an older project were the movement is still fine. then first I upgraded to unity latest: still fine.

then I upgraded GameCreator within the project, and it was still fine too !

conclusion: it happens mainly with freshly created projects.

also, I've built a new project to windows executable, and the problem is worse: the character can't move at all.

if you need some files, don't hesitate.

I Hope that it will help.

hello @Catsoft-Studios ! there are some news: today I've made a simple character controller of my own, not Game Creator at All, but my own scripts from scratch.

I move the character with arrows keys, I use the unity built in component character controller... for

some reason that I'm not sure, I ended with the same issues that I had

with GameCreator ! the character takes times to start moving ! I'm worried, because I begin to believe it's my hardware or configuration's fault ! I don't know what to do ! and I don't understand what's going on.

This is so strange. I'm not inclined to believe it's your hardware configuration, since this has started to happen in the past week (and some other users have reported the same thing). However, we tried to reproduce this yesterday without luck.

We've removed the acceleration and deceleration feature in the next release. The characters won't move as natural as they are now, but hopefully we'll be able to tell whether the problem comes from the acceleration/deceleration feature or not. The update should be live between today and tomorrow. Give me a heads up when you try it!

Thank you! Keep in mind, I do like the acceleration and deceleration, so once it's removed for testing, I would like to see it returned for sure. It's great to have that control over movement.

Also tested a new install with only GC installed and the issue is not there so I think it could have something to do with upgrading from one version to the next.

Thank You, the GC Update that removed the acceleration and deceleration has corrected the issue.
Hopefully that feature comes back. Again . . Thank You.

Will do, thank you!

I do not share that users view. I think Game Creator is great and I look forward to more modules in the future!

Traversal, mele and beyond ( in that order )  ☺️ :)  .... I will update the team on my findings. Again thank You.

Thanks. I've updated Game Creator and temporally removed the acceleration and deceleration feature. I'll leave it as it is for some days, see if there are any complaints still. If not (or any of you confirm that the problem is gone) I'll start working on the character's acceleration, but following a different approach.

Hello, I've tested the update, and it seems all fine, on a new project.

Excellent SLASH24! Thank you very much! :-)

i can confirm that the update removing those features corrected that issue. Looking forward to those features coming back new and improved! Thank you very much for your support.

Thanks IndieGameHustle! You're more than welcome! :-D
